Disney shuts down widely used free parking hack as spring crowds surge

Walt Disney World is taking steps to close a widely used loophole that allowed visitors to avoid parking fees.

With spring break crowds now surging, the resort has begun restricting access to its complimentary transportation system.

The update effectively ends a long-standing workaround that helped guests skip the $35 parking charge.

DISNEYLAND MAY SCRAP LONG-STANDING PARK RULE THAT FRUSTRATED VISITORS

For years, some visitors would park for free at Disney Springs, then hop on a bus to a Disney resort hotel before transferring to the park's internal transportation network to reach the theme parks without paying for parking.

That's according to the Disney Theme Park news blog, "Inside the Magic."

That hack is no longer flying. As of late March, Disney has begun limiting bus access to Disney Springs to guests who can prove they are staying at a Disney resort.

Visitors attempting to board are now being asked to show a MagicBand, room key or a digital reservation through the My Disney Experience app. Those without proof are being turned away and directed to standard parking or ride-share options, the blog noted.

The tighter rules are aimed at prioritizing resort guests during one of the busiest times of the year, when demand for transportation spikes.

In the past, the system largely operated on an honor system, allowing non-hotel guests to take advantage of the perk.

Fox News Digital reached out to Walt Disney World for comment.

Users on Reddit began sharing experiences with the new restrictions.

"We tried to hop on a bus to a monorail resort for snacks and drinks, but were told you must have a resort or dining reservation to board," a user wrote.

Others supported the move, with one person saying, "Love to see Disney finally protecting resort guest perks."

Yet another person commented that Disney should prioritize the visitors who are paying hundreds of dollars per night to stay on property over those simply visiting for the day.

Fox News Digital previously reported that Disneyland Resort may soon ease one of its long-standing rules that has frustrated visitors, potentially allowing guests to move between its two theme parks at any time of day.

The reported change would apply to visitors with Park Hopper tickets and Magic Key passes.

The park's rule used to be that visitors were required to wait until 11 a.m. before switching between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.

Under the update, guests would still need to enter their reserved starting park first but could hop to the other park afterward, depending on capacity.
